Identity Verification at Betzy
What is checked before a first prize, and what happens to the data behind it
Why Betzy verifies your identity
Betzy cannot release a prize to an account it has not verified. That obligation comes from the anti-money-laundering rules set out in the AML/CFT and KYC Policy and from the platform's age restriction (18 and over, and 21 and over where the jurisdiction requires it), so it is not a check we can waive for a particular account. Verification is staged: registration collects a limited set of information, and full verification, meaning a government photo ID and a real-time liveness check, is required before your first redemption. Full KYC is one of the six gates a redemption request has to pass, and the other five are set out on how to redeem Sweeps Coins. Staging is why a first redemption takes longer than the ones that follow it.
What is collected, and when
Registration collects five items; a first redemption adds three more.
| At registration | Before your first redemption |
|---|---|
| Full legal name, as it appears on a government ID | Social Security Number or ITIN, for IRS reporting |
| Date of birth | A government-issued photo ID |
| Residential address (no PO Box) | A real-time liveness check |
| Email address | |
| Phone number |
Betzy collects a taxpayer identification number at the point of first redemption, or at the point IRS thresholds are triggered, not at sign-up.
The documents you will need
You will need four things before a first redemption can be approved.
- A government-issued photo ID (driver's licence, state ID or passport)
- A real-time selfie for the liveness check
- A Social Security Number or ITIN, supplied on Form W-9 (Form W-8BEN for non-US persons)
- A payment method held in your own name
How the check runs
The check has five steps, and they run in a fixed order.
- Capture and review of your government photo ID
- An automated authenticity check for tampering and expiry
- A real-time liveness check matching a biometric selfie against the ID
- Sanctions and PEP screening
- Adverse-media screening
A contracted identity-verification provider runs these steps for us, and using one does not transfer our obligations: the outcome is ours to answer for either way. We do not publish a typical completion time for the check. KYC verification is instant. However, in some cases, there may be delays if the submitted photos are unclear or difficult to verify.
When extra checks apply
Crossing a published threshold triggers additional due diligence automatically, at six defined levels.
| Level | Trigger | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Light Touch | Cumulative purchases over $500 in 24 hours | Verify the ID on file; confirm ownership of the payment method |
| Standard CDD | Cumulative purchases over $2,000 in 24 hours | Full customer identification; sanctions and PEP re-screen; document the payment method |
| EDD Tier 1 | Cumulative redemptions over $5,000 in 24 hours | Source of funds documentation; compliance officer review; redemption held |
| EDD Tier 2 | Cumulative redemptions over $10,000 in 30 days | Source of funds and source of wealth; senior management sign-off; Currency Transaction Report evaluation |
| EDD Tier 3 | A PEP, adverse-media or OFAC hit | Immediate freeze; review by the Money Laundering Reporting Officer; Suspicious Activity Report evaluation; OFAC reporting |
| Crypto EDD | A crypto transaction of $3,000 or more | Travel Rule compliance; blockchain analytics; wallet verification |
Redemptions and large purchases are suspended until the review is complete and satisfactory.
Source of funds: what counts
Source of funds means documentary evidence of where the money in your account came from, and five kinds of documents are accepted.
- Bank statements from the last three months
- Your most recent tax return (W-2, 1040 or business return)
- Pay stubs or employment verification
- Business ownership or investment documentation
- Inheritance, legal settlement or gift documentation
We may ask for this at any time, and a request can be denied where it cannot be provided satisfactorily.
If verification fails
A failed check suspends the account pending resolution, prohibits redemptions, and reverses any request already pending. Where the law requires it, we file a Suspicious Activity Report with FinCEN, and 31 U.S.C. 5318(g)(2) prohibits us from telling you that we have.
Following cases results in indefinite hold rather than a request for better documents:
- Fraudulent, altered or fabricated identity documentation
- An account registered in a name other than the account holder's
- More than one account operated by the same individual
- Evidence of bonus abuse, including coordination with others to exploit promotions
- A chargeback or payment dispute filed in connection with the account
- Access from a restricted jurisdiction at any point material to the request
Any other violation of the Terms of Service or the Sweepstakes Redemption Rules carries the same consequence.
What happens to your data
Your data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.2 or higher and at rest with AES-256, which covers financial information and government ID data. Access is limited by the principle of least privilege, and multi-factor authentication is required for all administrative access to production systems.
Your data goes to contracted processors in seven published categories: identity verification vendors, payment gateway providers, cloud hosting providers, email and messaging platforms, AML and sanctions screening providers, Apple and Google as app distribution and in-app purchase operators, and law enforcement or regulatory authorities where the law requires it. Every processor is bound by a data-processing agreement to handle the data only as Betzy directs. Betzy does not sell personal data.
KYC and AML records are kept for a minimum of five years after an account closes, because the Bank Secrecy Act requires it. Tax records are kept for seven years. Biometric data is kept under the applicable state law and in no case beyond three years from collection or one year after last use.
You can ask for access, correction, deletion or an opt-out through privacy@betzy.fun or the in-app Delete Account control, and we respond within 30 days. An AML record-keeping obligation overrides a deletion request for the records the law requires us to hold. The details are in the Data Protection and Privacy Policy.
Common questions
Do I have to verify to play?
No. Registration collects your name, date of birth, residential address, email address and phone number, and that is enough to play. The government photo ID and the liveness check are required before your first redemption, not before your first game. The free ways to get Sweeps Coins are set out across how Betzy works.
When will Betzy ask me to verify?
Before your first redemption is approved, and again whenever your account crosses one of the thresholds in the table above. Sanctions, PEP and adverse-media screening also re-runs at least quarterly on every account, with no action needed from you.
Why do you need my Social Security Number?
For IRS reporting. Betzy issues Form 1099-MISC for cumulative net prizes of $600 or more in a calendar year, and a valid Form W-9 (or Form W-8BEN if you are not a US person) has to be on file before or at the time of your first qualifying redemption. Backup withholding of 24% applies without a valid taxpayer identification number.
What if my ID is rejected?
A rejected document leaves the redemption unapproved and the account unable to redeem until the check is satisfied. If you believe a request was denied in error, you can appeal to support@betzy.fun with supporting documentation within 30 days of the denial notice, under the Policies for Withdrawal.
Can I redeem to an account in another name?
No. You have to be the registered account holder, third-party withdrawals are not permitted, and the name on the account, the name on the ID and the name on the receiving payment method must match.
Can I have my data deleted?
You can request deletion through privacy@betzy.fun or the in-app Delete Account control, and we answer within 30 days. Deletion does not reach the KYC and AML records the Bank Secrecy Act requires Betzy to keep for a minimum of five years after an account closes.
